Embracing thousands of small and large islands in the blue water, the Seto Island Sea lies between Honshu and Shikoku. It is called the “Aegean Sea of the East” by virtue of its stunning scenery. Shimanami is a cycling route that let you cross a number of high bridges by bicycle across the Seto Island Sea, as if you are running in the air. There are only few cycling routes that run across straits, Shimanami is now getting in the spotlight as a cyclist’s paradise. What about Shimanami attracts so many cyclists? Let’s explore its allures.

 

1 Stunning Panorama View of the Seto Isand Sea

Connecting Onomichi city, Hiroshima and Imabari city, Ehime, Shimanami is a total 70km-long bike route. The route spans 6 islands, Mukoujima, In-noshima, Ikuchishima, Omishima, Hakatajima, Oshima, and each uniquely designed bridge connect these islands. From up on the bridge, the clear blue seawater and the sparkles of many islands mesmerize your eyes just like scattering gem stones. The Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge, the longest of the seven bridges of Shimanami, is known as the first three successive suspension bridges in the world. Overlooking a fantastic panorama view after a 4km of bike ride on the high bridge against wind will be one of the most memorable moments of your life.

 

2 Easy Flat Course

There are some ups and downs on the Shimanami route, however, it mostly consists of a series of flat roads along the coastlines. Therefore cyclers can enjoy relaxed bicycle rides. Every time you turn a corner thorough the gentle sea breeze, a tranquil scenery of the islands lies ahead. Sweet aroma rises from citrus trees full of cute little flowers in May and June, brightly colored lemons and oranges on the trees entertain your eyes during the fall.

 

3 Straightforward Route

The recommended cycling route of Shimanami is highlighted with “blue lines” to indicate the distance to destinations. No need of maps. You will get to your destination with no problem. Also, many of “Shimanami Cycling Oasis” are located along the blue lines for cyclists to stop for a rest, drinking water, toilet, pumping bike tires and bicycle stands all for free.

 

4 Multi-lingual Correspondence for Foreigners

No wonder Shimanami is much loved by cyclers from overseas. All the signs on the route are written in both Japanese and English. Also, English, Chinese and Korean translated guidebooks are available from information centers or can be downloaded through the official website. It comes with a detailed map of Shimanami as well as lots of information such as route guides and descriptions on the route highlights etc. In addition, English-speaking staff is available at the main information centers.
